The Problem With Shark Finning

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) states that one quarter of all shark, ray and chimaera species are threatened with extinction. 74 shark species are currently listed as threatened or critically endangered.  The greatest threat is "Finning". When live sharks are caught and all their fins are removed, discarding the live helpless shark in the water to sink and drown. The fins are used in Asian soup as a status symbol. It actually adds no taste , only texture.
