When to Buy Your First Camera

It’s a question we get all the time from beginners… “When should I get my GoPro? I want to show the world what I see!”

Most of the time the answer doesn’t depend on what camera setup you’re looking at, but rather your skill level. As we tell most of our customers, “Don’t take a camera on your first trip.” Chances are if you’re on a resort trip your dive boat may have a photographer to capture your magical moments. The most important thing for beginners to focus on is nailing that buoyancy. You don’t necessarily have to wait until it’s second nature for you to take a camera, but it’s very important to be completely familiar and comfortable with all your gear and buoyancy before taking down the camera. Otherwise, two things can happen: you’ll be bumping all over the reef and perhaps knocking into fragile corals or other divers, and your footage may turn out to be crap. Believe me, I speak from experience.

Though there is no set time period before you should get your first camera setup, we highly recommend being confident in your skills and taking an honest reflection before purchasing!
