The Importance of Staying Current
If it’s been awhile since you’ve dove, you may be tempted to take a variety of courses. Maybe it’s just been the better part of the year; you remember all the skills, but doing them over with a buddy is worth the time. Or maybe you don’t remember all your emergency procedures and need to do a scuba skills update. Regardless of the last time since you’ve splashed, there is never any downside to getting your feet wet prior to a big trip.
For starters, it acquaints you with that gear that’s been collecting dust for a year. You’ll have a firmer understanding of how it works, or if something leaks or needs to be replaced you can address it weeks beforehand (and not on the dive boat, never a fun situation). Next, you and your buddy can practice emergency skills like buddy breathing and emergency ascents. Again, some of those things we hope we never have to use, but if you do you want to know how to do it correctly. And finally, it’s an excuse to blow some bubbles! Though pools may not offer the most beautiful scenery, it is a controlled and relaxed environment for you to get back into the mindset of breathing underwater!
