Loosen Up! Stretches for Divers...
Whether to get on that pesky fin that seems so far away, or preventing common injuries above or below deck, we could all use a good primer on stretches for divers. Having a regular exercise and stretching routine can increase flexibility, decrease your risk of injury, and can make for a much more pleasant dive experience. Next time you’re going to splash, try warming up with these static stretches…
Calf stretch. This one’s a must for those who might get cramps under the waves. You can use a combination of raised platforms, exercise bands, or simple forward leans and bends to make sure your calves are loosened up before popping on those fins.
Chest & shoulder stretch. Very useful for preventing injury getting onto a boat, or if you need to manipulate your air source or a buddies’ equipment. Standing in a doorway, bend your elbows 90 degrees and press your forearms firmly in either direction.
Glute/hip twist. We all know our legs are usually one of the first muscles to fatigue on a trip, so be sure to keep them limber! Lying on your back, take your right knee and anchor it across your left leg to the floor. Repeat for each side.
