The Case for Integrated Octos

It’s a new age for regulator setups: out with the hoses, in with the hoseless! Or, uh, integrated, too! Not only can we now do away with computer hoses, but octos, too! Most major regulator companies have some version of a “safe second alternate” or “integrated octo.” The concept is simple: instead of a dedicated hose and regulator trailing off your right side, the entire octo stage just attaches and replaces your low pressure inflator on your left side.

It’s great for multiple reasons. One: you don’t have a trailing hose; less to get snagged on, increased hydrodynamics, what’s not to like?

Two: There’s less of a risk for not finding your octo in case of an emergency. It will always be right where your inflator is. Plus, because of the added components, they’re a bit bigger and easier to find than an inflator.

Three: In many emergencies, a struggling buddy may actually opt for taking your primary rather than your octo. For integrated octos, this is intended, as you are supposed to give your primary away and use the inflator as your octo.

Do you have an integrated octo? Tell us about it below!
